K-3rd Grade

Reading was encouraged for kindergarteners, 1st, 2nd and 3rd graders in a special way in December.  To learn about the history and development of our country, we focused on American symbols, inventions and important people.  A timeline of the 250 years of our country’s existence extended down the hallway showing when major events happened.

Each week started with teachers presenting the week’s theme.  An overview was given for the first week.  Mrs. Boon and Miss Davelaar dressed as a bald eagle and the Statue of Liberty to introduce the symbols.  The second week, a slide presentation was given to check the students’ knowledge of important people in America’s history.  The third week was early American life, especially pioneer life.

For each book children read, they filled out a liberty bell, covered wagon or star which was hung on the wall around the timeline.  On Dec. 23, the K-3 students met in the lunchroom for cake, juice and a game of Bingo with an American history theme.

Hearing the students talking about what they had read and finding the events on the timeline showed they had enjoyed Reading Month!

4th - 6th Grade

We enjoyed doing a Battle of the Books with the children.  We had 8 teams of 13 children in each group.

The students were able to read books in their groups and do different activities throughout the month pertaining to different parts of our history.   The students were able to collaborate with each other at different times throughout the week.  One event that they were able to talk about their books amongst themselves was enjoying lunch together.

Our grand finale was on December 23.  We got together in the Music Room and played Kahoot with the groups.  Each team was able to pick the correct answer with their team members helping find the correct answer. The questions evolved around the chapter books that they read throughout the month of December.   We took the total of the points from Kahoot and the points of involvement amongst the teams and totaled them up to find who was the Grand Winner.

The winning team enjoyed Pizza Ranch pizza!

All the children enjoyed it!!

Thank you to the teachers and helpers for making this such a fun and educational experience!!
